Hiding from the world is not what Jesus modeled.

Updated: Sep 14, 2022

The walls of the church have become an idol for some people, and COVID-19 has revealed some of this.

As a follower of Jesus, I am as excited as anyone to get back to corporate worship and face to face fellowship. But if we scream about religious freedom only to use that freedom to hide behind the four walls of the church, there is a disconnect between our reason for gathering and following Jesus.

Jesus did everything to teach us and empower us how to live like Him, in power and love, outside the four walls of the church. A famous law giver in Sparta (a nation known as the fiercest warriors on the planet at the time) named Lycurgus, is famously quoted as saying, “A city is well-fortified which has a wall of men instead of brick.”

God is looking for warriors (men and women) that live to confront and combat the powers of hell, not hide from them. Anyone that claims the name of Jesus is mandated to go and meet the enemy on his battlefield, not sit behind walls and expect him to come to them.

If we think that our culture is going to change by our complaining about our rights to sit in a building on Sunday mornings, we are confused about our calling to bring heaven to earth everywhere we go.

Those that are stuck in the dark torment of the enemy are not running to church, and truthfully if we’ve committed to following Jesus we should be focused on going to the lost and hurting, not hiding from them. Jesus surrendered His rights so that we would become a building of “living stones”, not ideal bricks.

When this current situation lifts if your whole motivation is to get back into a building, maybe it would benefit you to ask yourself this question...

Are you following Jesus and actively destroying the works of the enemy, or are you just wanting to go to church?
