“He’s an amazing guy…I just adore him,” said Elton John of his relationship with rap legend Eminem.
Elton John’s recent memoir, “Me“ revealed quite a bit about his life, but one of the most surprising might be that he is Eminem’s recovery sponsor.
Elton John had this to say about his life in early 1980's, “I was a huge cocaine addict at the time. My sense of values was buried under my self-destruction.” It was in the early 90's that the five time Grammy Award winner got help, "I finally summoned up the courage to say 3 words that would change my life: 'I need help'."
Elton John has been very vocal about his addiction and recovery of nearly 30 years. So has 15 time Grammy award winner Eminem, who first tried rehab in 2005 after decades of prescription drug abuse, but it didn’t stick. It was two years later in 2007 when his dangerous thirst for drugs nearly killed him.
Eminem, real name Marshall Mathers, forgot what happened leading up to his accidental overdose, he was found on the bathroom floor. Next thing he knew, the rapper was in the hospital. When his addiction was at it's worst, Eminem admitted to taking 30 Vicodin and 60 Valium a day. “The doctors told me I’d done the equivalent of four bags of heroin. They said I was about two hours from dying,” the now sober superstar said of his 2007 overdose.
Eminem got the help he needed and barely escaped with his life. Fast forward to 2010, “I’ve been helping Eminem over the last 18 months and he’s doing brilliantly," stated Elton John.
Both of the musical superstars are still alive, still clean and sober, still friends, and still helping each other with their recovery. If they can do it, anyone can do it!
